Government Provides More Detail On Relaxation Of Lockdown

Laura Kearsley

This afternoon, the Government has published its FAQ document to provide more information following on from the Prime Minister’s televised address yesterday.

For employers, this provides some more detail and some clarity around their position.

Relaxation of coronavirus lockdown – Guidance for employers

The guidance sets out that the starting position is still that all employees who can work from home should do and employers should make every effort to support this (including providing IT and other equipment).

Where work can only be done in the workplace and that workplace is not shut (non-essential retail, restaurants, pubs, bars, gyms and leisure centres will remain closed) the Government is reissuing guidelines for employers to ensure that their workplace is “COVID-19 secure”.

Face coverings at work are not compulsory. They are recommended for public transport and other enclosed public spaces where social distancing may not be possible.

The guidance also deals with employees’ rights. Where employees are fearful of returning to work, the guidance recommends that employers and staff discuss arrangements and employers take practical steps to promote social distancing. Employers should conduct a risk assessment and discuss it with the employees concerned.

Employees with concerns are being signposted to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) who will be able to take action against employers and ACAS in case of disputes.

As well as the guidance on COVID-19 secure workplaces, there has been speculation that there will be further guidance on the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme this week. As soon as anything is published we will report back.
