Helping you develop a financial plan that aligns with your business and personal objectives
As a business owner or senior executive, you’re used to making important decisions every day. Yet while much of your focus is understandably on the success of your business, it’s often harder to find the time and space to think about your own long-term financial future.
The reality is that many of the decisions you make within your business can have a significant impact on your personal wealth, your family and your future plans.
Whether you’re considering an eventual sale, planning your exit strategy, deciding how best to extract profits, protecting your business against unforeseen events or simply building financial security for the future, it’s important that your personal and business goals work together.
That’s why we take the time to understand not only your finances, but also your ambitions, your family and what success looks like for you beyond the business.
By bringing together financial planning, investment management and legal expertise, we can help you navigate complex decisions with greater clarity and confidence. Working closely with our Corporate, Employment and Commercial Property teams, we provide joined-up advice that considers the wider picture and helps ensure every decision supports both your business objectives and your personal goals.

What We Can Help With
Planning your exit
We help you work out how many more years you need to work before a sale or handover would let you retire on your terms, and what the proceeds would need to be to achieve. This usually means translating a likely sale price into an actual, ongoing income and lifestyle, factoring in tax, reinvestment, and how the money is drawn down in the future.
Extracting value tax-efficiently
Extracting funds from the business and managing remuneration tax-efficiently is usually more beneficial well in advance of a sale. Once a sale process has started, many of the more tax-efficient structuring options may become unavailable, which is why this is one area where early advice has a genuinely measurable financial impact.
Protecting the business
Keyman insurance, shareholder protection and income protection cover the financial impact of losing an owner, director or key employee to death or serious illness, protecting the business itself, not just the individual. For businesses with more than one owner, shareholder protection specifically ensures the surviving owners can buy out a deceased or critically ill shareholder’s stake without being forced to sell the business or take on an unwanted new co-owner.
Pensions, incentive plans and wealth management
Business owners often under-fund their own pension while reinvesting in the business and can miss out on maximising pension contributions and other allowances as a result. We also advise on managing proceeds from incentive plans and RSUs in a structured, tax-efficient manner, and provide wider wealth management for business owners. That means investing surplus funds, whether within the company, in your pension, or from sale proceeds, so money that isn’t working for the business is still working for you.
A common misconception: “My business is my retirement plan”
Treating the business itself as the entire retirement plan is a common assumption, but it concentrates all your risk in a single, illiquid asset whose eventual sale price and timing are both uncertain. Personal pension contributions, protection, and a plan for extracting value along the way (not just at the point of sale) give you options if the business sells for less than hoped, takes longer to sell than planned, or doesn’t sell at all.
This matters even more for owners who haven’t yet had a formal valuation. A realistic, professionally informed view of likely sale proceeds, built into a cashflow model alongside your personal pension and savings, gives a far clearer picture of when retirement genuinely becomes affordable.
How We Work With Business Owners
Business owner planning tends to run in parallel with decisions your solicitors are also advising on, so timing and sequencing matter.
- Understanding the whole picture: your business plans and your personal goals, since for an owner these are rarely separate questions.
- Building a plan: covering extraction, protection, pensions and investment, sequenced against your likely business timeline.
- Coordinating with your other advisers: your accountant and our own Corporate, Employment and Commercial Property teams, so decisions align rather than conflict.
- Reviewing as the business changes: annual reviews keep the plan current as the business, and your role in it, evolves.
This is an ongoing relationship rather than a single piece of advice. Informed and detailed advice for a business owner in their forties planning to grow the business for another decade looks very different for the same owner five years from a planned sale.

Financial Planning for Business Owners & Executives FAQS
Below, we have answered some frequently asked questions concerning financial advice for business owners & executives
-
When should I start financial planning before selling my business?
Ideally several years before any sale, since pension contributions, share structuring and personal tax planning are all more flexible with time in hand. Decisions like maximising pension contributions from company profits, or structuring shareholdings for tax purposes, are far harder, and sometimes impossible, to arrange retrospectively once a sale is underway.
-
How much of the proceeds from selling my business will I actually keep?
Once tax, reliefs and how the proceeds are managed afterwards are accounted for, it’s likely this will be less than the headline figure. That’s exactly why we build a cashflow model translating a likely sale price into the actual income and lifestyle it would support, rather than treating the headline figure as the answer.
-
Should I take income as salary or dividends from my company?
Both are usually part of the answer rather than one being simply better: salary supports pension contributions and certain allowances, while dividends are taxed differently and don’t count as earnings for pension purposes. In some cases, employer pension contributions can also be an effective way of extracting profits from a business, attracting corporation tax relief, while building long-term retirement wealth.
The right balance depends on your personal tax position and your plans for the business, which we review as part of a wider plan.
-
What is keyman insurance and do I need it?
Keyman insurance pays the business a lump sum if a key individual (often a founder or director) dies or becomes seriously ill, covering the cost of lost expertise, recruitment, or lost profit while the business adjusts. It’s worth considering wherever the business would be materially affected by losing a specific person and this is relevant, not only in larger companies.
-
Can I maximise my pension contributions from my business?
Employer pension contributions from company profits are often more tax-efficient than paying yourself more salary or dividends first, since they can reduce corporation tax while building your personal pension. The right amount depends on your existing pension savings and the Annual Allowance rules, which we review as part of your wider plan.
-
What happens to my shareholding for Inheritance Tax if I die while I still own the business?
Business Property Relief can reduce or remove Inheritance Tax on qualifying business assets. From 6 April 2026 100% relief was capped at £2.5 million combined with any agricultural property, with 50% relief above that. If your business is worth more than this, it’s worth having your position reviewed against the cap.
-
Do I need a financial adviser if I already have an accountant?
Yes, a financial adviser complements the services that an accountant provides, and we are used to, and happy to work alongside them. While an accountant will typically focus on areas such as business accounts, taxation, and compliance, they are generally unable to provide regulated financial advice.
For example, an accountant may recommend that a pension contribution could be tax-efficient, but they cannot advise on the most suitable pension provider, investment strategy or specific financial products. A regulated financial adviser can help with those decisions as part of a wider financial plan.
An accountant may also advise on the tax implications of a transaction, whereas a financial adviser can help assess questions such as:
- Can I afford to retire?
- How much do I need to sell my business for?
- Am I saving enough for the future?
- Can I help my children financially without affecting my own security?
- What’s the most sustainable way to meet my spending needs in retirement?
Together, this helps ensure financial decisions are considered from both a tax and long-term planning perspective.
