In October 2021, almost 60 years after the offences took place, Nigel Pipe, a former housemaster at Skegby Hall in Sutton, was found guilty of sexually abusing children and sentenced to 26 years in prison.
Nigel Pipe, now aged 87 will spend the rest of his life in prison for “repeatedly abusing his position of trust” and sexually abusing five boys, all under the age of 16, who were in his care in the 1960s.
Pipe is the latest paedophile in a long line of abusers, who were employed by Nottingham Councils in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, to be convicted of abuse and it shows that it is never too late for a survivor of abuse to get the justice they deserve.
Abuse claims against employers for the acts or omissions of their employees
In a workplace context, an employer (in this case the Nottingham Councils) can be liable for the acts or omissions of its employees. The recent Supreme Court judgement in Armes v Nottinghamshire County Council held that a local authority would also be liable for the actions of foster carers.
