In previous blogs (see at the bottom of this article) we set out the recommendations of The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) and what the Government had pledged to do to carry out those recommendations.
Suella Braverman accepted the need to act on all but one of the Inquiry’s recommendations.
Frustratingly, one year on from the final report of IICSA and following an eight-year inquiry, which cost £188 million, the Government has failed to make any significant progress towards implementing the recommendations.
Professor Alexis Jay, who completed the inquiry into institutional failure to protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation a year ago explains to the BBC that she was “hugely disappointed” and “frustrated” at the Government’s lack of action.
Professor Jay wants to see all political parties include in their manifestos a clear commitment to deliver the recommendations of the IICSA final report.
The Inquiry heard accounts from hundreds of victims including 350 victims of abuse in Nottinghamshire Council care homes and foster homes. Thousands contributed to the IICSA’s Truth Project.
Comment
This will have been retraumatising for all who took part and their courage is to be commended. The Government needs to act without further delay to implement the recommendations made and to protect future generations of children.
