GDPR Has Arrived – But Is Your Business Ready?

Laura Kearsley

The EU’s new legislation, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), has finally arrived and comes into effect today. As an employer you may not feel as prepared as you would have liked for the new legislation but you can still take action to make sure your business is compliant and avoid any fines that could be issued by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

Is Your Business GDPR Ready?

Hopefully by now you will have:

  1. Carried out a data audit to evaluate and assess your current data protection practices.
  2. Assessed how you can update existing practices so that they are in line with the GDPR.
  3. Stopped processing data that you do not have a legitimate need for.
  4. Assessed how long you retain data for and how you store and secure it.
  5. Thought about electronic devices that your staff use and considered whether you will still allow employees to use their own smart phones or provide company phones and laptops instead.
  6. Encrypted data where possible, particularly if you are transferring data or allowing remote working.
  7. Made staff aware of GDPR and updated your HR policies and staff privacy notices
  8. Reviewed and updated or introduced job applicant privacy notices
