In our previous blog post, we explored the allegations brought by cricket player Azeem Rafiq against Yorkshire County Cricket Club. However, the hearing had not yet taken place.
Whilst the sanctions have not yet been announced, a report has now been produced by the Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) which found that racism, sexism, classism, and elitism were found to be “widespread” in English and Welsh Cricket.
Within the report, a fine of £500,000 was recommended. This was broken down as follows:
- £100,000 for the mishandling of Azeem Rafiq’s case
- £100,000 for the deletion and destruction of data
- £150,000 for not taking action relating to racist behaviour
- £150,000 for the systemic use of racist language over a prolonged period of time
The club is also set to face sporting sanctions including a deduction of 48 to 72 points in the 2023 County Championship, a deduction of four to six points in the 2023 One Day Cup, and a deduction of four to six points in the 2023 T20 Blast.
A lawyer for the club has said:
“The last two years have been some of the most difficult in the club’s entire history. Yorkshire is not the only club to have issues with racism, nor is cricket the only sport to have done so. But really Yorkshire has been a lightning rod for concerns about racism in sports and its reputation, performance and finances have suffered and continue to suffer as a result”.
Comment
Whilst the club has faced legal proceedings, the biggest impact has been the negative publicity. This highlights the importance of employers focusing on the company culture both from an employee well-being perspective and for the sake of their reputation.
