It’s a specialist court that makes decisions for people who lack the mental capacity to make them for themselves — appointing deputies, and approving decisions about their health, welfare and finances.

How long does a deputyship application take?
Most straightforward applications take three to six months from submission to approval. Emergency applications can be processed faster where someone’s welfare is at immediate risk.

Do I need a medical report?
Yes — a capacity assessment from a doctor or medical professional confirming the person can’t make the decision in question. We’ll explain exactly what’s needed and can recommend assessors if that helps.
