Priory Hospital Aberdare to be given a new lease of life

A former private mental health hospital in South Wales is set to be extensively refurbished and reopened – following a transaction supported by our expert Commercial Property team.

The freehold site of the old Priory Hospital Aberdare, just off Cardiff Road, in Aberaman, has been bought by national health and social care operator Rushcliffe Care Group, which has a portfolio of more than 1,000 beds.

Mary Gharmount and Sarah Burns from our Commercial Property team acted on behalf of Rushcliffe Care Group, supporting the company with the purchase of the site. Associate Mary said:

“Nelsons has a long-standing relationship with Rushcliffe Care Group, so we were delighted to support the company with this transaction.

“This deal will give a new lease of life to the former hospital and bring back vital mental health services to this area of South Wales. Rushcliffe Care Group has grown substantially into mental health hospital services since it was set up 30 years ago.

“This transaction further cements the national operator’s commitment to providing quality health and social care to patients across the UK.”

The independent Priory Hospital Aberdare closed at the start of 2019 after providing care, treatment and rehabilitation for people diagnosed with autistic spectrum conditions or learning disabilities.

Rushcliffe Care Group, which was established in 1989, offers a wide portfolio of diverse services including head injuries, mental health, learning difficulties, rehabilitation and specialist schools.

Refurbishment works have started and the site – which houses a detached red-brick property with off-road parking to the front and lawned gardens to the rear – is set to reopen as a specialist mental health hospital in late 2020.

Surjit Rai, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman at Rushcliffe Care Group, said:

“We are very pleased to extend our provision of specialist hospitals further in Wales with this multi-million-pound investment in this site. I would like to thank the team at Nelsons, who, as always, provided very helpful and crucial commercial advice couple with great service.”
