Nelsons Goes ‘Above & Beyond’ To Support Nottingham Charity’s Relocation

Reading time: 3 minutes

Our expert team of commercial property specialists has successfully secured a new home for Nottingham-based youth charity, Base 51.

The 30-year-old charity had been on a funded lease at Castle Gate from Nottingham City Council but due to budget cuts in 2022, the charity needed to seek out a new headquarters.

Having worked with Base 51 for several years, our Commercial Property team was instructed to support a transaction for part of the YMCA building in Peachey Street to meet the hard deadline.

Liam Wilkinson, Legal Director in our Commercial Property team, said:

“I’ve represented and supported Base 51 since I joined Nelsons two-and-a-half years ago, and gave some initial advice on how best to approach the upcoming situation of its lease and relocation.

“It was important to ensure the new space suited the charity’s needs including still being central and accessible. We acted in negotiations with YMCA and their solicitors for Base 51 to occupy part of its building on Peachey Street in Nottingham city centre. The process took less than two weeks from the first draft. It’s quite challenging to make that move, but I’m pleased to see the Base 51 team has settled in well and they have been able to continue their important work supporting young people.”

The long-term vision is for Base 51 to move to a specially designed, purpose-built youth centre in the coming years, ensuring a sustainable future for the charity. Base 51 CEO, Jo Jepson, has been the driving force behind finding new premises and organising the relocations. Jo said:

“Base 51 has been successfully working with Nelsons for several years now, so they were the natural choice to help us navigate the lease of the new building for our charity. Liam and the team went above and beyond to negotiate the best terms for us, and now we are happily settled in our new building on Peachey Street, continuing to provide support for young people in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. We look forward to continuing to work with Nelsons in the future.”

Base 51 has supported more than 50,000 11–25-year-olds in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire since it started in 1993. Initially formed in response to the lack of sexual health provision for young people, it now recognises young peoples’ wellbeing is more than just addressing their physical health needs, but their whole person. This includes their emotional health, having settled accommodation, healthy relationships and ultimately making a positive transition to adulthood. The new site reopened at the Peachey Street location in April 2024.

Our Commercial Property team advises businesses across the East Midlands with acquisitions and leases and disposals, involving everything from large industrial units to small retail shops.
