According to a recent study by Moorepay, employees across the East Midlands are more likely to suffer an accident in the workplace than in comparison to the rest of the UK.
Moore Workplace Injury Study
The report findings said that the chances of sustaining a workplace injury are 24% more likely in the East Midlands, with 371 out of 100,000 employees likely to suffer an injury (the national average being 301 people).
Within the East Midlands, the study found that Blaby and Daventry had the highest amount of accidents with 792 (Blaby) and 677 (Daventry) out of 100,000 employees. Broxtowe in Nottingham was reported to be safest area in the region with the lowest amount of 176 injuries per 100,000 employees.
Phil Barker, Head of Health and Safety Services at Moorepay, commented:
“No region wants the reputation as the UK’s most dangerous place to work, but unfortunately the case for the East Midlands is very strong.
“Employers and employees must be made aware of the number of health and safety risks and workplace injuries.
“Workplace health and safety must be of paramount importance to organisations. They have an obligation to provide a safe working environment and minimise risk. This starts by having a clear process in place, with regular risk assessments at the very least,”
The region which only fared marginally better than the East Midlands was the West Midlands (341 per 100,000 people). In fact, according to the study, workers in Birmingham are more likely to suffer a fatal workplace accident than anywhere else in the country.
The South East was reported to be the safest area for workplace injuries with 237 per 100,000 employees.
Workplace Injury Claims
There are various types of risks that an employee can encounter at work. The type of risks that a person may encounter is largely dependent on the type of work that they do and some jobs are more likely to encounter risks than others.
Every business has a legal duty to make sure that their employees are safe whilst at work, which includes ensuring that their workers have received sufficient health and safety training, appropriate equipment for use and maintaining a safe working environment. This obligation to maintain safety within the workplace is outlined in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and must be adhered to by all organisations.
