Police Investigation Into Gosport War Memorial Hospital

The Police are to undertake a new investigation into the deaths of hundreds of people who were patients at Gosport War Memorial Hospital between 1989 and 2000.

Last year an independent report found that the Hampshire based hospital had shortened the lives of 456 people by inappropriately prescribing them strong painkillers, such as Opioids. As a result of the report, Kent and Essex Police undertook a review to establish if there was “sufficient new evidence” and relatives of those died as patients at Gosport War Memorial Hospital have now been informed that a full investigation will commence.

Assistant Chief Constable, Nick Downing, who is head of serious crime at Kent and Essex Police, commented:

“This investigation is not about numbers, it is about people – specifically those who died at the hospital and the loved ones they have left behind.

“This is a highly complex and emotive case that some family members have been living with for more than 30 years, and I would like to thank them for their continuing patience and understanding during this process.”

It is understood that the Police will be speaking with family members of those who died at the hospital to obtain statements regarding the medical care they received.

Gosport Independent Panel Report – June 2018

The report published last year looked at patients admitted to Gosport War Memorial Hospital, and highlighted that the hospital had a “disregard for human life” for a high number of patients that they treated during this time period.

The report commented that taking in account missing records, that the number of lives shortened by the hospital’s drug administration could actually be substantially higher than 456.

Dr Jane Barton, who oversaw the administration of medications on the ward, was named in the report. In 2010, Dr Barton faced disciplinary action, having been found guilty of shortcomings in her care of 12 people, who she treated between 1996 and 1999. However, no legal proceedings were brought against Dr Barton and she has since retired.

The report also highlighted that the families of the victims had been “consistently let down” by Gosport War Memorial Hospital, even when they had raised concerns about their loved ones medical treatment.
