Pothole Risks To Cyclists

Potholes and other defects in the road can go unnoticed by motor vehicles. However, they are starting to pose an increasing threat to cyclists.

It was recently reported by the Craven Herald and Pioneer that a cyclist suffered an accident on such a road surface whilst riding his tandem with his partner. A deep rut in the road sent him somersaulting through the air. He dislocated his shoulder, leaving him unable to work for weeks. The article goes on to report the recent death of a cyclist caused by a defective surface around a pothole.

Pothole Cycling Injuries

Cars and lorries are able to pass over cracks and holes in roads with fewer problems due to their wider wheels. However, narrower cycle wheels can cause their riders to fall off when riding over them. This can cause injury from the fall itself, or from passing vehicles after they have fallen.

The Highways Authority has a responsibility to ensure roads and pavements are maintained, making them safe for all road users. Whether it is the frequency of inspections, or their criteria for undertaking a repair, they must comply with their duties. However, the popularity of a specific route with cyclists must also be taken in to account.

If you have been injured as a result of a defect in the road and you wish to claim compensation, it is important to get a ‘measured image’ of the defect before it is repaired. A measured image depicts the pothole with a tape measure showing just how deep it is, in addition to images showing it in context with the surrounding area.
