Cycling accidents are unfortunately very common and most occur when a driver does not see the cyclist on the road. If you have been involved in a cycling accident which has happened in the last three years, and it is not your fault, it is only fair that you are compensated, not only for your injury/injuries but also for any damage to your bike and/or cycling gear and equipment.
At the time of the accident, you are likely to be shocked, disorientated and/or distressed. It is important that you take a step back from the accident scene to somewhere safe, if possible, and take your time to assess your injuries and call an ambulance and/or the Police if you believe this is required.
Cycling accident claims – What you can do:
- Ensure you obtain the driver’s details – including their registration number. The colour, make and model of their car would also be useful information.
- Use your phone to take photos of the accident area from several different angles. If the driver refused to give their details, it is always a good idea to take a photo of their number plate.
- Take photos of any visible injuries at the time of the accident and of any damage to your cycling gear and bike. It may also be worth going to your local bike shop and getting a quote for any repairs, in writing. If your bike is a write off, get a quote for a like-for-like replacement.
- If there are any witnesses, obtain their details (their name and phone number) as their evidence may be useful later on.
- Visit your GP or A&E if you feel your injury/injuries are worsening.
- Get specialist legal advice at the onset – If you are involved in a cycling accident that was not your fault, you are likely to be eligible for a claim for compensation.
