Compensation for Extravasation Injury Caused by Negligently Fitted Cannula

Matthew Olner

Nelsons represented Mr S in a claim against Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust for an extravasation injury, the accidental leakage of intravenous medication, due to a negligently placed cannula.

Mr S was taken to hospital after being found collapsed. He underwent a CT scan which showed head injuries and was taken to the Intensive Care Unit. While Mr S was unconscious, a cannula was fitted to his left ankle which left neat potassium running onto his leg overnight. The drug should only have been administered through a central line and not through his leg.

Mr S suffered blisters and a large area of necrosis with blackened skin. He underwent debridement and was left with a scar around 3cm x 1.5cm. His symptoms resolved within 7 months.

The Trust accepted that concentrated potassium infusions should only be given through a large central vein. The Trust further admitted that this was a breach of duty and caused Mr S’ injuries.
