Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

The Derby Telegraph has recently reported on the case of an Ilkeston landlord who was found guilty in the criminal courts, following the death or one of her tenants due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide is often dubbed ‘The Silent Killer’ by the press, due to the fact that exposure to it can cause death or serious injury without any warning. The fumes are colourless and odourless. Consequently, strict rules and guidelines are in place to try and keep people safe.

Carbon monoxide is often present in properties due to faulty gas appliances. However, inadequate ventilation, blocked flues or chimneys, and damaged or dirty grills or ovens can also be responsible. People who fit and maintain such appliances must be qualified to carry out the work. Landlords who rent out properties where such appliances are present have a duty to conduct regular safety checks and to deal with problems when they arise.
