Call For Compulsory Public Liability Insurance

The Law Society Gazette has reported on a speech given by the incoming President of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL), Jonathan Wheeler, at their annual conference.

Wheeler refers to the requirement for employers to have compulsory liability insurance in most cases, and suggests that the same requirement should be extended to the likes of tattoo parlours, hair salons and so on.

Comment

We would certainly agree with this. We have dealt with many matters where victims have suffered injury as a result of treatment they have received at a tattoo parlour, hairdresser, beauty salon etc, or in places like small independent shops or takeaways.

Some have liability insurance, but many do not. When there is no insurance, there can often ensue a ‘wild goose chase’ of trying to find out precisely who is responsible and whether they are worth suing. After our extensive investigations, we often find that the proprietor turns out to be elusive or impecunious, so it is not necessarily worth pursuing a claim. We welcome Mr Wheeler’s suggestion.
