As Good Divorce Week 2025 approaches (10–14 November), we’re joining family law professionals across the UK in highlighting the importance of reducing conflict and promoting constructive approaches to separation.

What is Good Divorce Week?

Organised annually by Resolution, Good Divorce Week is a national campaign aimed at raising awareness of how families can separate in a way that is respectful, child-focused, and less adversarial. With court delays now averaging 41 weeks for private children cases, the need for alternative solutions has never been more urgent.

Resolution’s mission is clear: to promote a better way to divorce — one that prioritises collaboration over confrontation.

What is a ‘Good Divorce’?

We understand that the idea of a “good divorce” might sound contradictory. A divorce usually follows the breakdown of a relationship, which can lead to an increase in tension, especially when heading towards legal proceedings. However, a good divorce doesn’t mean the process is painless or without emotion. It means that both parties are supported to make informed decisions, communicate openly, and prioritise the wellbeing of any children involved.

It’s about creating a separation process that’s constructive rather than combative, which helps families move forward with dignity, clarity and mutual respect.

What is Resolution?

Resolution is a community of over 6,500 family lawyers and other professionals who are committed to helping families find constructive ways to resolve disputes.

At Nelsons, our family lawyers are members of Resolution and are committed to promoting a non-confrontational approach to resolving separation and family problems, which can lessen the emotional impact on children and the wider family.

Introducing Resolution Together

One of the most innovative developments in family law is the Resolution Together model, which promotes and prioritises collaboration. This is a fairly new model of legal support that allows one solicitor to advise and assist both parties in a separation – a significant shift from the traditional route where each person instructs their own lawyer. This approach is suitable for couples who are broadly aligned in their goals and want to resolve matters amicably, without the stress and cost of traditional litigation.

Key benefits include:

  • Reduced conflict: Working together fosters cooperation and mutual understanding, helping to avoid escalation.
  • Lower costs: Sharing one lawyer can significantly reduce legal fees, making the process more accessible.
  • Faster outcomes: Avoiding court delays means quicker resolutions, which can ease emotional strain.
  • Child-focused solutions: Parents can prioritise their children’s wellbeing without being drawn into confrontational proceedings.
  • Empowerment through clarity: With one solicitor guiding both parties, there’s less confusion and more opportunity for clear, informed decision-making.

Why it matters now

The family justice system is under immense pressure. Long delays, rising costs, and emotional strain are pushing families to seek alternatives. Resolution Together offers a timely solution — one that aligns perfectly with the goals of Good Divorce Week.

We believe that early legal advice and collaborative approaches can make a real difference. Resolution Together helps families avoid the pitfalls of litigation, supporting them to move forward with dignity and confidence.

Real-world impact

Although still a relatively new model, Resolution Together is already making a difference. Solicitors across the UK are reporting positive outcomes for couples who choose to work together. Whether it’s agreeing on financial arrangements or co-parenting plans, the process is proving to be more efficient and less stressful.

This process doesn’t just focus on the legal outcomes, it also prioritises emotional wellbeing. When couples feel supported and empowered to make decisions together, the long-term impact on their families can be transformative.

Is Resolution Together right for you?

This approach isn’t suitable for every couple. It works best when both parties are willing to engage constructively and are broadly in agreement about the way forward. If there’s a significant imbalance in power, or unresolved safeguarding concerns, then separate legal representation may be more appropriate.

If you or someone you know is considering separation, Good Divorce Week is the perfect time to explore your options. Resolution Together could be the right path — one that leads to a more peaceful, respectful, and child-focused future.
