Nelsons Advises Midlands Academy on Relocation in College Expansion Bid

East Midlands' law firm, Nelsons has advised Midlands Academy of Business & Technology on its relocation to Mansion House, a property which offers more than double the space of the independent FE and HE college's original premises and will enable it to accommodate almost three times as many students.

A 5 year lease has been signed by Midlands Academy on Mansion House on Guildhall Lane in Leicester. The move from previous premises at Melbourne Centre in Leicester sees the Academy increase its available total space from 800sq ft to 1800sq ft, enabling it to now accommodate up to 400 students, most of which are international, as well as greatly improve facilities to offer an enhanced student experience.

Commenting on the relocation, Business Manager at Midlands Academy, David Read says: "This has been a big step for us. We've had support from everyone, the Landlords, the City Council and our professional advisors to make this an enterprise of which Leicester can be proud. Now we can concentrate on delivering high quality education in a high quality environment."

Advising Midlands Academy on the lease deal, James Coningsby, Head of the Real Estate team and a Director at the Leicester office of law firm Nelsons says: "This relocation sees Midlands Academy bring an impressive property back into good use afer remaining empty and on the market for some time. Most importantly, Mansion House enables Midlands Academy to embark on an impressive expansion path which, as the intake of overseas students increases over time, will bring new jobs and greatly benefit the local economy year on year. We were delighted to be instructed on this straightforward transaction and we wish them every success in their plans for growth."

Innes England's Chris Page managed the letting of Mansion House on behalf of landlord HSBC Vehicle Finance Ltd to Midlands Academy.

Chris Page, surveyor at the Leicester office, commented: "Innes England is delighted to be part of the Midlands Academy expansion success. It is also pleasing to see a good alternative use for these city centre premises as the focus for the Leicester office development moves outside of the city core."

Accredited by the British Accreditation Council for Independent Further and Higher Education, Midlands Academy was established 7 years ago by Rokonuddin Ahmed and now has a team of 35 employees. The Academy has gained an outstanding reputation for enabling students to access British University degree courses through it's one year University Foundation Course (UFC). It also offers overseas students the opportunity to improve their spoken English, listening, reading and writing skills through the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) course and the International English Testing System (IELTS). As the Academy has progression agreements with De Montfort University, as well as both Coventry and Middlesex universities, many of its overseas students continue to study in the region.

In addition to catering for the overseas student market, Midlands Academy caters for local students, offering foundation, post-grad and professional studies courses in a range of business management, information technology, humanities, life sciences and other subject areas.
