5th to 11th February 2024 is Sexual Abuse & Sexual Violence Awareness Week, a week dedicated to raising awareness of sexual abuse and violence across the UK.
The week provides an opportunity for anyone who wishes to join in a conversation and raise awareness of this very real issue. It aims to address and challenge the stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding sexual offences, to educate on the importance of consent, and to shine a spotlight on the support which is available to those affected.
Shocking statistics show that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 18 men in England and Wales have been raped or sexually assaulted as an adult and 1 in 6 children have been sexually abused.
Hundreds of events take place throughout the UK to raise awareness, to educate, and to encourage conversation about this issue. Many police forces and universities run their own events during this important week to provide support and education in the hope that we can reduce the incidence of these shocking crimes and create a society where we can all feel safe.
Sexual abuse claims
Claims that can be pursued in cases of sexual abuse include:
- CICA claims: sexual abuse/assault is a criminal offense (such as rape, sexual assault, or sexual exploitation) and the perpetrator may face criminal charges brought by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). If the abuse is reported to the Police then you may be eligible to make an application to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA).
- Civil claims: If you have been sexually abused by someone employed by an organisation or institution (such as a school, workplace, or religious institution), then you may be able to pursue a civil claim against that organisation.
Comment
Strict time limits apply to making applications to the CICA and for pursuing civil claims although there are exceptions to the rules. Therefore, it is important to seek legal advice as soon as possible.
