What is SANDS Awareness Month?

Every June, SANDS (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society) Awareness Month raises awareness about the impact of stillbirth and neonatal death. The aim is to support families, break the silence, and promote safer pregnancy and baby care.

Every day in the UK, around 13 families lose a baby before, during, or shortly after birth. Alongside grief, some may also wonder if something more could have been done to prevent their loss.

When to suspect clinical negligence

Clinical negligence can occur when medical care falls below a reasonable standard. In pregnancy and newborn care, this may involve:

  • Failure to monitor a baby’s wellbeing and properly during the birth
  • Delayed response to signs of distress
  • Errors in interpreting scans or test results
  • Missed opportunities to intervene, e.g. through bringing forward delivery
