Nelsons’ Clinical Negligence Team Secures Over £31.5 Million for Clients in 2025

Our Clinical Negligence team has marked another exceptional year, recovering more than £31.5 million in compensation for clients – including a £17 million settlement for one family.

Our team of highly experienced solicitors work to empower clients and their families, giving them a voice, providing support and helping them to get answers, while aiming to recover the compensation they need to rebuild their lives.

Their work includes cases involving catastrophic injuries, fatal cases, surgical errors, delays in diagnosis, psychiatric injuries, as well as inquests – some of which have gained national media attention. Team members have also been involved in the Ockenden Maternity Review of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, supporting affected families through the process and providing advice on potential claims.

Partner Julie Hardy, who has extensive experience working on birth and childhood brain injury cases, said:

“Achieving justice and securing the financial settlements our clients deserve remains at the heart of everything we do, and we are committed to pursuing the best possible outcomes for those affected by medical negligence.

“Our team at Nelsons continues to grow and brings together decades of industry-leading experience. We look forward to building on the momentum from 2025 and continuing to support clients and their families in the years ahead.”

There were three landmark settlements secured in 2025 that demonstrate the team’s expertise and dedication. Julie achieved compensation exceeding £17 million for a child who suffered a brain injury due to a delayed diagnosis of a rare inflammatory condition that affects the brain and spinal cord, which included a lump sum and annual periodical payments for care and case management.

Partner Emma Zukowska successfully recovered over £5 million on behalf of a client who required bilateral lower-limb amputations, while partner Matthew Olner achieved almost £7 million for a woman who suffered a severe brain injury.

Throughout 2025, the team also obtained hundreds of thousands of pounds in interim payments, helping clients access essential care, support, mobility aids and treatment at the earliest opportunity.

Our Chief Executive, Stewart Vandermark, said:

“The results achieved last year by the clinical negligence team reflect not only outstanding legal expertise but also a genuine compassion for helping people who have experienced negligence by medical professionals.

“It cannot be underestimated the amount of time and dedication that goes into these often highly complex cases, to ensure that mistakes are addressed, organisations are held accountable and people and their families can get the justice they deserve. I am incredibly proud of the team and thank them for the important work they have done over the past 12 months.”
