Rising teenage badminton player Megan Brierley was awarded a £500 cheque at a charity dinner last week (18th July) – which was held in aid of SportsAid to help raise money to support the next generation of British sports stars.
The 15-year-old, of Wollaton, in Nottingham, started playing badminton at the age of 10 and – despite coming to the sport later than her peers – Megan found she excelled and has not looked back since. Megan has played in Badminton England tournaments nationwide, taking home gold, silver and bronze medals. She is now on the Badminton England performance pathway and is competing with players across Europe and beyond.
Megan was presented with the cheque by badminton star and Olympian, Gail Emms MBE, who was the guest speaker at the SportsAid dinner, which was held at Trent Bridge Cricket Ground.
Nottinghamshire business professionals also raised £671 for the national charity at the event, which was sponsored by Nelsons, Yorkshire Bank, Musson Liggins and Trent Bridge Cricket Ground. The attendees also had the opportunity to watch the Notts Outlaws v Worcestershire Rapids T20 Blast match. The money will go towards providing financial support to local, talented, young people who have no other access to vital funding to assist them with training and ultimately enable them to reach their sporting potential.
Tim Lawler, Chief Executive of SportsAid, said:
“SportsAid provides the country’s brightest young sporting prospects with financial support, recognition and personal development opportunities at a crucial time in their careers. We are very grateful to everyone who attended the SportsAid dinner in Nottinghamshire as their fundraising efforts are so important in enabling the charity to make a major difference to athletes, just like Megan, in pursuing their ambitions.”
David Bladen at Musson Liggins who chaired the dinner, added:
“We are very proud to be able to support these young people and help make their dreams become a reality. SportsAid is a fantastic charity, which helps athletes progress in their chosen sport and we are delighted to once again be involved in supporting young athletes, just like Megan.”
The fundraising events are held three times annually and during each event, an athlete is presented with a £500 donation. Since 1976, SportsAid has supported tens of thousands of athletes by distributing more than £50 million in awards. Previous recipients of SportsAid support have included Sir Steve Redgrave and Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill.
