Businesses from Nottingham raised more than £900 at a charity event in order to support local youngsters to reach their sporting potential.
The money raised from the event – which took place at Trent Bridge Cricket Ground on Thursday, 2 August – will go towards providing financial support to local, talented, young people who have no other access to vital funding to assist them with training and ultimately enable them to reach their sporting potential.
Event sponsors Nelsons, Yorkshire Bank, Trent Bridge Cricket Ground and Musson Liggins along with other guests heard from Notts County manager Kevin Nolan, who spoke about his career history. The attendees also had the opportunity to watch the Nottingham vs Derby Vitality T20 Blast Match.
Abbie Breakwell was presented with a £500 cheque to help reach her Paralympian dreams at the dinner. The 15-year-old, of Long Eaton, has been playing wheelchair tennis for more than two years – and has already won two gold medals at the National School Games and been a finalist in the Wheelchair Tennis British Open. The cheque will help further her development in the sport.
Tim Lawler, Chief Executive for SportsAid, said: “The support from local businesses for young, talented athletes in the East Midlands makes such a difference, not just financially, but in providing them with a motivational boost to keep pursuing their sporting ambitions. We wish Abbie all the best for the future and look forward to watching her progress.”
Daniel Craggs, Fundraising Manager at Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club added: “SportsAid is a fantastic charity which helps athletes progress in their chosen sport. We are delighted to continue our on-going support of the charity; the event was a great success and we are very pleased that we are able to help make local people’s dreams become a reality.”
The events are held three times annually and the sponsors choose an athlete to present with a £500 donation. Previous recipients of SportsAid support have included Sir Steve Redgrave and Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill.
