Following revelations last year about historical abuse claims in Nottinghamshire children’s homes, Nottinghamshire Police has set up Operation Daybreak to investigate.
In September 2014, it was reported that thirteen care homes in and around Nottingham had been subject to claims for compensation as a result of historical child abuse. This led to calls for a police investigation.
Arrests have been made and numerous suspects have been identified. Understandably, feelings about this investigation are running high and a recent County Council meeting was disrupted due to shouting from the public gallery calling for a full public enquiry.
It is understood that more than sixty individuals have made complaints about child abuse from as early as the 1960’s. The investigation is understood to be currently centred on the care homes of Beechwood in Mapperley, Bracken House in Bulwell, Sycamore House in Sherwood and Hazelwood Children’s Home.
Historical Abuse Claims
Claims for compensation for historic abuse are complicated and difficult, not least for the Claimant involved. Various factors must be investigated to properly present a case and representation from specialist solicitors should be sought. Issues including the potential defendant’s knowledge, limitation, the Claimant’s date of knowledge and the psychological effects of the abuse all need to be carefully and sensitively considered.
