APIL Injury Prevention Week 2020 – Road Safety For Pedestrians

Lisa Preece

The not-for profit organisation representing injured people, the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL), is promoting road safety for pedestrians as part of their Injury Prevention Week 2020, which takes place this week (17th to 21st August).

The awareness week, which has been expanded from an awareness day, is an annual event which seeks to raise public awareness about the prevention of accidents and injuries.

The campaign also looks to persuade politicians that the best solution in reducing personal injury compensation claims is to attempt to cut down on the number of accidents.

Sam Elsby, APIL President, commented:

“We started Injury Prevention Day because we found that the government always focuses on the wrong thing when it looks at personal injury and legal reform. The arguments are never about preventing needless harm in the first place. Let’s be honest, the government’s work is often about restricting rights to redress after the harm has been done.”

This year’s road safety campaign promotes pedestrian safety, with a particular emphasis on children who will soon be returning to school following the summer holidays.

YouGov research, commissioned by APIL, has shown that:

  • A high number of pedestrians (44%), who don’t drive, did not know that white lights on the rear of a parked car indicate that the vehicle is about to reverse.
  • Almost two thirds of parents don’t believe that their children understand the dangers of the roads or concentrate properly when near or crossing the road.

Throughout this week, APIL will be releasing a series of stories, highlighting the importance of road safety to pedestrians on social media.

Get involved

APIL would like to get as many people involved with Injury Prevention Week as possible, and are asking people to share their own messages and campaigns on social media (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram) using the hashtag #IPWeek2020.

Preventing injuries

Injury Prevention Week doesn’t just highlight the importance of road safety to pedestrians, but reminds us that many other injuries occur, which could and should be prevented. Beyond accidents on the roads, injuries are sustained in a variety of places, whether it’s at work, in the home or in a public place. They happen across the East Midlands and the UK every day. It is vital that people are aware that most accidents are avoidable, if the appropriate care is taken and health and safety rules and guidelines are followed.

Where a person is injured in an accident that wasn’t their fault, they may be able to make a claim for compensation and should seek specialist legal advice.
