Health & Safety At Halloween

As we approach Halloween it is worth giving some thought to the health and safety concerns which might arise during this increasingly popular festival. It’s a celebration particularly enjoyed by children, which gives rise to the need for extra special care.

Health & Safety At Halloween

It is important to take the following safety precautions during Halloween:

Personal Safety

  • During this time of year the evenings are much darker, with drivers’ visibility reduced. Walking to and from parties or collecting treats carries the usual risks associated with cars and other vehicles, so it is essential to be mindful of this and take extra care and steps to be seen.
  • If a child is under 12 years old, a parent, guardian or responsible adult should always escort children during trick or treating.
  • Trick or treat in groups and remain together.
  • Talk to children about the personal safety risks at Halloween and what they can do to keep safe, e.g. taking a mobile phone with them, avoiding strangers or houses that are not decorated.

Costumes & Props

  • Most importantly, ensure that costumes are fire retardant. You may recall last year’s news coverage of the nasty accident involving Claudia Winkleman’s daughter whose costume was set alight by a candle.
  • Any accompanying props, such as swords, forks, etc., should be a soft flexible material and are classified as toys.
  • Face paints used as part of a child’s costume should be marketed at should have a CE mark on the packaging.
  • Ensure that the costume will provide the child with enough warmth and is suitable for October weather.
