Increase In Domestic Abuse As A Result Of Coronavirus Quarantine

Melanie Bridgen

A number of campaigners across the UK have warned that the imposed coronavirus lockdown could lead to a rise in the number of domestic abuse instances, as victims will have to spend most, if not all, of their day with their abuser.

There is also a concern that abusers will use the current circumstances as a means to stop their partners from having any freedom.

Recent statistics from other countries seem to confirm these concerns with a 20% rise in domestic violence in Northern Ireland, 32% in Paris, and 40% in New South Wales.

Victims are allowed to leave their homes during the lockdown

In an attempt to support victims, Home Secretary, Priti Patel, confirmed in a Mail on Sunday article that victims of domestic abuse are allowed to leave their homes to seek help and support at refuges, despite the strict coronavirus rules in place.

In her article, Priti Patel wrote that the UK lockdown would be much harder for those whose “home is not the safe haven it should be”, warning abusers:

“You will not get away with your crimes.”

Priti Patel also wrote that the Government would protect victims, stating that they have given £1.6 billion to local councils to support victims and are also working with a variety of charities.

Tips if you are at risk of domestic abuse

Domestic abuse charity, Refuge, has issued some tips to victims, which includes keeping mobile phone charged and with them at all times, and, if a victim’s abuser becomes violent, to try and keep out of rooms (e.g. the kitchen, garage) which might have potential weapons.

Further advice from Refuge can be found here.

Non-molestation injunctions

Domestic violence places a real and present threat to families. However, injunctions are available to protect victims and their children.

At Nelsons, we have a team of specialist family law solicitors in Derby, Leicester and Nottingham who are experienced in protecting victims of domestic abuse and will respond quickly to your enquiry.

If you need an injunction one of the team can take your instructions over the telephone and make the application to Court on the same day. We can also make sure the Police are on hand to protect you after the injunction is served as they will have a copy of your order.

If you are at serious risk then an injunction order can be made without notice to the other party, giving greater protection to you.
