20th to 26th May 2024 is Action for Brain Injury Week.
What is Action for Brain Injury Week?
Every year, around 350,000 people are admitted to hospital with an acquired brain injury.
That’s on every 90 seconds.
It only takes a few seconds for life to change in an instant and it can happen to anyone. Strokes, falls, road traffic collisions, assaults, medical negligence are just a few examples of brain injury causes.
Action for Brain Injury Week is an annual campaign run by Headway UK, a national brain injury charity. The campaign is used as a platform for raising awareness of brain injury.
A Life Re-Written
This year’s Action for Brain Injury Week 2024 is called “A Life Re-Written” and will illustrate how brain injury can affect anyone at any time, particularly focusing on how a brain injury can throw plans into disarray, change life goals, and even cause a loss of sense of who we are.
We all have plans for the future, and perhaps goals we want to achieve. Suffering a brain injury can be life-altering, throwing all those plans out the window and completely re-writing our lives. Headway’s Action for Brain Injury Week aims to raise awareness of this, how difficult it is for those impacted, and for their loved ones, highlighting the support that is available, and the challenges that are faced.
Looking at life after brain injury, the campaign will chart positive examples of brain injury survivors who have experienced post-traumatic growth and successfully rebuilt their careers, relationships, and lives. It will also outline the realism of life after brain injury, and how positive outcomes are not always the norm.
Fronting this year’s campaign is BBC The Traitors star, Andrew Jenkins. He said:
“Headway – the brain injury association is an amazing charity doing amazing things to help people rebuild their lives after brain injury. I’m delighted to support this year’s Action for Brain Injury Week and help tell the story of others who have had their lives re-written by brain injury.”

Headway UK
Headway is a UK-wide charity that works to improve life after brain injury by providing vital support and information services, including:
- A freephone helpline: 0808 800 2244 and email
- A comprehensive website containing information and factsheets on all aspects of brain injury
- A range of booklets and publications designed to help people understand and cope with the effects of brain injury.
- An emergency fund to assist people dealing with the financial implications in the immediate aftermath of a brain injury.
- A Brain Injury Identity Card to help in everyday situations and if you come into contact with the criminal justice system.
- A directory of approved residential homes, rehabilitation units, and respite facilities specialising in ABI.
The charity also lobbies for better support and resources to be made available to people affected by brain injury and works to raise awareness of brain injury and the devastating effects it can have.
In addition, a network of Headway groups and branches across the UK and the Channel Islands provides a wide range of services including rehabilitation programmes, carer support, social re-integration, community outreach, and respite care to survivors and families in their own communities.
Headway’s local groups and branches work hard to raise funds at a local level to continue to provide and develop the services they offer.
To find your nearest group or branch, or to support their work locally, enter your postcode into the search box on the headway homepage.
