Nelsons Appoints Child Abduction Lawyer

Nelsons has appointed a specialist child abduction solicitor, Terri Harman to its family law team.

Following her appointment, Nelsons has also been appointed as the only firm from the region, and one of only 28 firms in England and Wales, to be instructed by the British Government's International Child Abduction and Contact Unit (ICACU) to represent parents in international child abduction cases.

Having practised children and family law since she qualified at Coventry-based firm Bate Edmund Snape Solicitors in 1996, Terri first became a child abduction specialist following her appointment to Rugby firm Brethertons in 2007. She is a Resolution Accredited specialist in Child Abduction as well as Private Children Law, a Law Society Accredited Children Panel lawyer and an experienced advocate.

Commenting on Terri's appointment, Jayne Chilvers, head of family law at Nelsons says: "We're delighted Terri has decided to join the family law team at Nelsons. With the number of international child abduction cases continuing to rise, Terri's specialist expertise will be an invaluable asset to the firm and the region."

Nelsons, which has one of the largest family law teams in the East Midlands and is recognised for its expertise in handling complex children law cases, can now represent parents in this country and abroad in publicly funded Hague Convention cases where children have been removed from their country of residence without parental consent.

The United Kingdom is a party to the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, Council Regulation (EC) No 2201/2003 and the European Convention on Recognition and Enforcement of Decisions concerning Custody of Children and on Restoration of Custody of Children. It is also a signatory to the new Indian and Pakistan judicial protocol on Child Contact and Abduction.
